14th December 2016 - Commenting on the news that fewer than half of Dundee's P7 pupils are hitting key numeracy targets, Jenny Marra MSP said:
"Dundee's results are very dispiriting for very pupil, teacher and parent in the city.
"It is clear that a fresh approach is urgently required. Dundee City Council will appoint a new Director of Education in the New Year. They should call off the recruitment process now and start an international search for an expert with a proven track record in raising attainment especially in schools in areas of deprivation. It is simply not good enough for the Council to re-shuffle people who have run our education department for years and overseen this decline onto higher salaries.
"Children in Dundee deserve the best. These results are some of the worst in Scotland. Teachers need the support of high quality management who have proven that they can drive change and raise standards to let every child in Dundee achieve their potential. People of this calibre in education achieve great results. The Chief Executive of our Council has a responsibility to children in Dundee to find one now."
